CERAMICAS POMBAL
Illustration. Postcards & Business cards design.

Ceramicas Pombal is a small brand from Galicia, A Coruña, founded in 2022 by Sara Giunta. She makes vases from clay, combining simple organic shapes with inexact elements and textures. Most of her inspiration comes from the region’s culture and history, so designing the cards for Ceramicas Pombal I wanted to choose a visual symbol, that represents the area where the brand’s roots are.

Los Mallos is an old neighborhood in Coruña, where Sara started to work with ceramics. The studio is surrounded by quiet streets with low-rise old buildings. Their walls are covered in scratches, the paint peels off in some places, but still I find them inexpressibly elegant. Negative spaces of their windows come in different shapes and sizes, layered with patterns of delicate curtains, shines on a glass surface and graceful metal grids in top of that.

In Galician the word “pombal” means a place where doves are. A freedom of a flying bird is a beautiful metaphor to Sara’s spontaneous way of creating objects, while keeping them simple and delicate. And just like each dove has its own cozy nest in the dovecote, each vase takes place in artisan’s imagination, before becoming physical and being framed with beautiful flowers.

In the final design, the image of Los Mallos windows graphically translates Ceramicas Pombal’s sense in the context of its location. Silhouettes of vases are standing on windowsills, blurred behind the glass and gently framed by patterned meshes.
